The Jack & Jill race to Gibsons is an NYC Thanksgiving tradition.  This year the weather forecast was not great, and attendance was limited to 3 monohulls and 3 multihulls...actually only 2 multihulls as Dream Chaser needed to be back in Nanaimo Saturday evening, and therefore sailed over and back the same day.  As often seems to happen...the actual weather conditions were better than the forecast.  The breeze was mostly NW13-16 on Saturday, and this meant a quick crossing.  Contessa looked great with double headsails, main and mizzen...with Ron singlehanding all 50+ feet across the strait.  Simone tried to pass to leeward but could not get thru the massive wind shadow, so instead passed to windward (Ron apparently waved with all fingers as they passed).  Dream Chaser spotted a whale tail (humpback?) sliding into the water 200m ahead, and waited nervously while sailing at 10+ knots watching for where it would next surface...luckily it was 1 boatlength away to port and not directly in front!  The finishes outside of Gibson's were close as the pack compressed together...with the exception of Mail Order Bride screeching well ahead and finishing first. Tarka's roomy pilothouse was a perfect gathering place before heading to Smitty's Oysterhouse for dinner.  The return on Sunday started an hour earlier, and the breeze was "sportier" once away from Gibsons, with some reefing (or double reefing) for the return trip.  Ron Campsall deserves special honors for wrestling with stubborn furling gear, and a tempermental engine on Contessa (had to bleed the injectors one by one, a nasty job in an enclosed space while being thrashed-around by waves).  Still...Ron was looking forward to doing the J&J next year!  Results and a few pics are shown below...
