Gyro Cup Regatta 2011/2012

The Gyro Cup is a great opportunity to get in a variety of races, all in one weekend.  Saturday the courses are generally shorter with the typical "around the cans" format.  The Saturday evening festivities consist of an informal get together with a pot luck supper followed by a presentation of the prizes and trophies to the various NYC racing series winners for the year.

On Sunday we often like to stretch things out with a single "long distance" race around one or two of the neighboring islands.

The Gyro Cup is just another great reason to come out and join us at Nanaimo Yacht Club for some spectacular racing and fabulous camaraderie.

2011 Gyro Cup - October 14

What a great two days of racing that was: fabulous fall weather, good wind, and a very efficient race committee meant we got our money’s worth!  Bill and the Ioneers have got to be thanked for putting on a great show over land and sea.  The registration, division-splits, money-collection, prize-draws, dropping marks on Friday, developing race courses/SI’s, recording times, getting quick results out, and the clear communication are all down to the RC, so a BIG thanks to them.

It takes a tremendous amount of effort and dedication to carry that off so effectively: they made it LOOK easy, but that’s just a reflection of the behind the scenes organization and effort they all put in.  I’m a great advocate of the VHF, and the RC’s use of it seemed to get most boats to the line and ready to race with minimum fuss.  Something to think about…

Saturday’s pot-luck was well attended and, despite the many dishes everyone brought, by the night’s end it looked like a plague of locusts had been through it!  The only time anyone saw Bill Allan and crew was on the land, as Lawn Dart was usually halfway to the moon by the time the rest of us jostled on the line and sorted out our pecking orders, lines, and lanes.

Bill generously agreed to be MC and awarded many trophies and pennants to racers (mainly seated at one table).  His humour is always entertaining and glossed over the many hiccups which were down to me: so thanks, Bill!  I’d also like to thank Tom North for running the bar both days: his attendance is voluntary but vital to lubricate the sailing cogs post race…

A special mention goes to Brian Robinson for making the effort to bring Flight down from SCYC for this event.  He had to leave early to get back up before dark, but by the smile on their faces, the crew seemed to enjoy the regatta.  Perhaps one or two of us might consider a trip up there over the winter or spring to sail a race or two?
