Fall Series Race Day 1 - September 27

Conditions were spectacular for the opening of the Fall series racing at NYC on 27 September.  The breeze was NW 8 - 12 knots, the water was flat, and the sun was shining the whole day...what more could you ask?  Dream Chaser served as the RC platform, with Kevin, Steve, & Bill helping...thanks!

A new boat joined the fleet...Ken Holland's refurbished C&C 33-II called:  Stark Raven (will the dinghy be named Mad?).  Some of the regulars were away this weekend, so the fleet size was reduced to:  Stark Raven, Runaway Girl, L'Aristo, and Morningtide.  Even with the small fleet, much fun was had by all.

Race #1 started with a beat to P15, and it was interesting to see the pointing of each boat.  After the turn at the top mark, Stark Raven  flew an asymmetrical spinnaker wing-on-wing straight down the course...kinda like a Martin 242 would!  It seemed to work, and she was first to the leeward mark, and first to finish.  The only other boat to fly a spinnaker was L'Aristo.

Race #2 included Finger's Island, Snake Island Bell buoy, Gallows Point, and a finish at the NYC docks.  The breeze was lighter around the islands, but there was always enough to keep moving.  More spinnakers appeared on the downwind legs, and Runaway Girl did just that...and ran-away from the fleet.  Very interesting beat into the harbour, with massive & sudden wind shifts, and more than a few round-ups.  Some boats were showing a lot of their bottoms!  Morningtide sailed well into the mud flats area (look at the pictures), and apparently did not touch-down...Peter later said something about trying to scrape-off some pesky mussels that were growing on the keel.

A great start to the Fall series...lets spread the word that racing is back-on at NYC

Fall Series Race Day 3 - November 1

Fall Series Race Day 3 was a high action affair, with intermittent heavy rain and squally and variable southeasterly 5 to 25 knot winds. The amazing Team Expresso assisted by Commodore Terry-Lynn Campbell and past Commodore Jim Philips coordinated two races while skillfully keeping the committee boat from dragging anchor too far from a starting area near Power squadron reef.

Race one went to an inflatable windward mark, around Five Fingers Island and back to the start/finish line. All boats kept their spinnakers securely stowed for this race with tight downwind angles and gusty wind in the high teens.  The miles went by quickly and the preliminary results show all of 9 seconds separating the first three boats across the finish line after an hour long race, in the order of Dilligaf, Stark Raven, Runaway Girl and L'Aristo.  Great racing!

Race two was a longer affair rounding the windward mark, then to P15 and over to Snake Bell and a Harbour finish off the NYC docks. Some boats kept it together better than others and reefed sails and a few rounds ups were spotted on the race course.  Preliminary results for race two show the finish order after and hour and a half of racing being Stark Raven, Runaway Girl and Dillligaf.

I'm not sure even water proof cameras would have stood up to the torrential rain, so no photos today.

Fall Series Race Day 4 - November 15

In moderate winds the Race Committee decided to run one longer race with a downwind Harbour start.   Racing was tight out around the lee of Protection Island with Stark Raven taking an early lead going close to the island.   Stark Raven, Dilligaf and Expresso were bunched tightly at the Gallows Mark.   Unfortunately both L'Aristo and Expresso retired early in the race.  Expresso retiring due to a steerage mechanism failure.   The remaining boats raced in a wind that was slightly building to Five Fingers Island where the ebb tide and North West wind made for swells that were in the range of 1.5m.  Runaway Girl retired at Five Fingers.  The remaining fleet had a great downwind romp to Entrance Island finding speeds well exceeding hull speeds down the large standing rollers.   The rounding at Entrance lead to a upwind beat to Snake Bell with the remaining boats looking for shelter from the wind and waves going along the Gabriola shore.   The remaining race was an attempt by the Dilligaf to leg out on Stark Raven to the finish but to no avail.   Congratulations to Ken Holland and crew for sailing a very good race.   All told, a wonderfully enjoyable day on the race course.
