Day and a Bit Race Results 2019 June 15
NYC Day & a Bit race 2019
Seven boats joined the D&B race this year, including several first-timers. Boats ranged in size from a Catalina 27’ Soulmate to a Jeanneau 39’ Following Breeze, with a classic Mason 38’ ketch Zolanda and a Corsair F27 trimaran Dream Chaser thrown-in to mix up the fleet even more!
Conditions were promising on Saturday morning, but the breeze faded-away mid-strait. Later, the beginnings of a Howe-Sound in-flow breeze teased us into thinking the finish line was possible before the 16:30 cut-off, but this too faded away and no boats completed the course. If there was an award for perseverance, it would go to Richard on Zolanda who continued sailing past 16:30 using a genoa, main, mizzen, and a mizzen staysail!
Those who have done this event before know to head straight up to Mike’s place and choose from over 50 types of gelato (this seems to be the main reason some people do this event)! Dinner was at Leo’s offering a typical Greek menu. Next year we may change it up and try the new Mexican place: Lunita’s?
Sunday’s wind forecast was not promising, but the reality turned out near-perfect with SE 5-10 for the entire course. The finish order was Dream Chaser, Sea Lion, Following Breeze, Otaria, Zolanda, Soulmate, Shaheen II.
The after party was at Carlos O’Bryan’s Pub…the new title sponsors for the Day & a Bit race. Stories & jokes were swapped, and we scanned photos taken during the crossings (thanks Sandy). The grand prize draw of a $100 Pub Gift Certificate went to Tom & Sue on Soulmate. A $50 Pub Gift Certificate went to the race winner Greg on Dream Chaser.
